Family Caregiver Tips in Wellesley, MA
You first agreed to be your mother’s caregiver because you didn’t think there were any other viable options. Maybe you noticed her having more difficulty taking care of herself, doing laundry, getting out to the store, and taking part in basic daily activities. Or maybe she was hospitalized following a minor stroke, surgery, or other medical emergency and you knew she needed somebody around to take care of her and help out on a daily basis.
As a family caregiver, you might not have thought much about the stress that becomes involved in this type of work. It’s important to think about being a caregiver as a job because when you do, you will be much more adherent to the hours your mother will need assistance.
When you’re running around, have little time to yourself, and begin to feel overwhelmed by stress and anxiety, it can have a direct impact on other areas of your life. You may begin to grab a quick meal at a local fast food restaurant such as McDonald’s or Burger King. That doesn’t seem to be a major problem at the time, but when you look back over the past several weeks as a family caregiver, maybe you’ve noticed a pattern developing where you are getting your food from these places much more frequently.
When you start eating at fast food restaurants, it increases various risk factors with regard to your health, especially cholesterol. September is Cholesterol Awareness Month so pay attention to the foods you eat and if you don’t seem to have time enough to prepare a healthy meal for yourself instead of fast food, it could be elevating your bad cholesterol levels, thus increasing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other serious health issues.
What is the alternative?
You want to make sure your mother is safe within the comfort of her home and even if she has refused the prospect of home care, when you explain how much this work as a caregiver is affecting you and you learn about all of the various activities and things she could be doing with the right type of home care aide supporting her, she will likely be more willing to at least look into the prospect of it.
Don’t let caregiver stress overwhelm your life or affect your health in a negative way. Call on the services of a professional home care aide who works for an agency.
