Mom Thinks Dad is Being ‘Foolish’ and Taking Unnecessary Risks

As your parents get older, you worry about their safety. Safety for seniors can become compromised due to the natural process of aging and other factors. When people get older they begin to lose more and more muscle mass. Perhaps your parents are in their late 70s or possibly even their 80s. You noticed the changes in their physical capabilities in recent years.

Right now, though, your mother keeps calling you because she’s freaking out about your father. Every time she tells you something he did, she’s talking about how “foolish” he’s being.

Maybe he’s trying to change the batteries in the smoke detector, grabbing the kitchen chair to stand on. Perhaps he’s trying to climb up a ladder outside the house to clean out the gutters. Whatever it is, at his age, she sees it as foolish.

Your mother sees the risks.

She sees your father every single day. She knows his physical capabilities. She is also acutely aware of the risks he’s putting himself in just to do the simple tasks that may or may not be absolutely necessary.

However, your father doesn’t seem to be concerned at all.

Your father is independent and, as many people in your family say, headstrong. He is determined to continue doing whatever he has to in order to maintain his house, keep his family safe, and stay active.

Is it only a matter of time before he’s injured?

The older he gets, the more muscle mass he loses. He can work out and exercise every single day, but he’s still going to lose muscle mass and eventually that is going to make it extremely risky for him to do some of these activities that used to come naturally or be extremely simple for him to do.

What happens if he slips and falls?

He could be seriously injured. Mortality rates significantly increase after major injuries, such as a broken hip. The older a person is, the greater the risk of these injuries occurring.

What’s the solution?

When it comes to safety for any senior at home, hiring a home care aide is a great option. Even though your father and mother are fully capable of taking care of themselves for the most part, a home care aide may offer the physical support and assistance he needs right now to stay safe while doing these various activities around the house.

It may be time to sit down and talk about this option before it’s too late.
